I suspect there will be input screens, with a mesh size small enough to deter larger fish. Objective will be to stop trees etc from wrecking or jamming the screw.

They have a problem. Large mesh size and large branches will get through and cause seizure. Small mesh size and the screens will get blocked with Tesco carry bags, and condoms.
