hi moff.. i have been fishing on rivers 20 years + and only this year bought a feeder rod.the reason being not allways do barbel or chub wrench the rod round****enty of times its just been just a little tap on the tip. before that i used my float rod. i used to miss bites because the risistance was alot higher and fish used to drop the bait. on big rivers YES u may need a beefed up rod.???? i dont know where u live but the n/west rivers tend to be small and low this time of year.all i use is a feeder rod with 1 ounce tip when very low. IT WORKS FOr ME... billy
