Default fishing for pike
hi, just wondering would a greys 2lb t/c rod be enough to fish for pike in the day time until it gets a bit dark then i was going to switch to barbel fishing. or would i need a different rod, thanks.

Hi beefy i do alot of pike fishing , and when i first started i was using a 2lb t/c carp rod for them i then upgraded my carp rods to 3lb t/c so i would say that a 2lb t/c is fine .
As for needing a different rod for barbel that depends on how you fish for them some people use carp gear for them and others like me use a carp feeder rod, so if it was me i would pike fish during the day and as it goes dark swap to my feeder rod but thats just me.
Hope this helps alittle.

cheers carl, ive only got a 1.5&2.0 lb t/c greys tx barbel specialist rod, will that be enough for both just switch from lures to feeder or ledgering or will i need something else, ive never pike fished before, just thought i could get up on the wye early in the day for pike then barbel fish later, cheers, beefy.

i do alot of pike fishing at coombes reservoir and the pike in there go into the 30lbs mark hence why i changed my rods, i am not well up on pike in the wye but i think your 2lb t/c rod should handle them fairly well and i would say based on my limited knowledge of the wye (as never fished it) that you will be fine .
cheers and good luck carl..

ive heard that they can reach 20lb plus on the wye aswell so will the 2lb t/c be ok for 20lb plus or will i have too increase t/c to cope.

If you are casting a lot of bigger baits then i'd suggest something a little heavier, maybe 2.25 - 2.5.

As Hammer says, it is more about bait size, than fish size. Whilst on that may I add a plea for anglers to avoid multiple (and especially barbed) trebles, unless on an instant strike rig or a lure.
I caught two pike last year with rusting Jardine type tackle inside their mouths, and signs that someone had just cut the wire, rather than trying to remove the hooks. It is never difficult to remove a Jardine rig, if you don't ever use them!! Try a single hook for smallish baits. It really works.
