Default Essex Trout
Rare for me to report anything in here but here goes. River Goyt slightly up, with a little colour today. No barbel but 4 middling dace, a trout and a grayling early morning. Later, in a different swim, an obviously very stupid but stunningly pretty 2 pound trout, which I caught twice, on the same bait, within twenty minutes. Went very aerial the first time it was hooked, but unsurprisingly had become rather more sluggish a little later.
Trout have to be the piscine equivalent of Essex blondes, exciting to play with, gorgeous to look at, but very little going on behind the eyelashes.
I keep wondering why fly fishermen seem to equip trout with so much natural cunning. "I studied the fish, watched it carefully, thought about it over my fly box, planned it, chose a fly and finally outwitted the brownie".
Outwitted? Outwitting a fish, especially a trout, hardly seems to be in the same class as beating Carol Vorderman in a maths test. Yet we so often hear of anglers ( and not just trout fisherman) very proudly saying that they outwitted their quarry. Surely anyone being proud to have out-thought a fish must have very low targets in life? Be pleased with the experience for sure, but leave it there.

Anyone think I need to take cover on this one?

P.S. Jerry...think I found the spoon again.
