hydro wheels on rivers goyt and tame
HYDRO WHEELS/ARCHIMEDIAN SCREWS
found this while reading up on hydro wheels/power/archimedian screws

all reccomended sites/plans/estimated costs etc etc

i spoke to the stockport fed chairman a couple of weeks ago and a public meeting has already taken place, in december i was told, so far upon speaking to a few sdaf members very little or no publicity of the planned construction has been seen.
Naturally the fed are not happy with the planned constructions and will be submitting an objection to stockport planning department.
the planned constructions will not only affect the fishing and fish habitat but local wildlife and walkers.
I was planning to start a petition to hand in with the fed objection (strength in numbers they say) but with no experience in the matter i,m a little stuck on where to start so if any body would like to give me some help in the matter please pm me
cheers
tight lines all

Hi Jerry, nice to know the Fed is objecting. Have they any details of the planning proposals, so that we can individually add our protests? See also my reply in the other thread, get anyone you can interested , for the amount of electricity generated is so feeble that it is NOT worth the disruption to wildlife and recreation. It is my experience of planning that the wildlife issues are those most likely to have an effect on the planning.
A shame there are no great created newts there, but the dippers nesting at the weir edge would find it very difficult to find an alternative, equally suitable nesting site.

Do we know whether the public meeting was just to discuss Otterspool, or was PM included within the scope of that meeting. I don't want to miss the next meeting if it happens. I knew nothing of the first, suggesting it was not widely publicised. As far as I can see none of the local anglers knew of it either.

i only found out about the last meeting after it had happened by speaking to the fed chairman, now i assume they would have been contacted directly by the council or by the company thats dealing with the project, in the conversation i had with him both weirs were mentioned at the meeting.
you,d think with something of this nature that signs would have been put somewhere to notify the public of there planned intentions
cheers

Why dont the council do something very bold and make a true commitment in to improving our carbon foot print and not just pathetic token gestures to being green.
One of these would look nice in woodbank park, maybe on a smaller scale

Jerry, what exactly was the public meeting? Was it a pre - planning public meeting, or has the planning proposal actually been accepted yet?
There will certainly have to be two separate applications made to the planning department. Have they been made yet? have they been discussed? We may not be too late but need information.
Can we ask the Fed to keep us informed such that we might aid them? I suspect formal planning consent has not yet been granted, but have no way of finding out. I asked my councillor and he has yet to reply.

I have made contact with the local RSPB, telling them of possible effects of the birdlife. They will be discussing this at their meeting this week, and their conservation officer will also be contacting me.
If you know of any wildlife/conservation groups, it might be an idea to let them know too.

Again not a great deal of electricity. I bet the payback time before any true profit is generated will be in the tens of years. But of course this scheme should not affect the river too directly. Not more than it does already.
The article suggests that this is a water supply reservoir, which also feeds the Tame. Does it only feed the Tame when full, or is there a steady supply to the Tame regardless of water levels in the reservoir?
If it is a water supply reservoir they could also use the "tapwater" outflow to generate power.
Harrison's weir has also been considered for power, but I can't remember whether it was given the go ahead.
