I don't think, if the design is anything lke the New Mills installation, that the structure will straddle the river. I suspect that it will be built alongside the river....so 8 metres wide, but as seen fron the side? The water will be diverted from above the weir, into the screw, and out again below the river, once its potential energy has been harvested.

that will take it upto the first bridge support, in my book thats a third of the total width of the weir.
