Default New Sonubaits Barbel Baits
UK bait giant Sonubaits has released a new range of barbel baits this June.

There are four new products - pellets, paste, hook pellets and liquid enhancers.

The pellets differ to your traditional offerings as they have an elliptical shape that prevents them from rolling along the bottom in flowing water. You can get these in 4mm, 6mm, 8mm and 12mm sizes so they can be fed loose, put through a feeder, placed in a dissolving PVA bag or used as hookbaits. There is 1kg of pellets in each bag.

The Barbel and Carp paste is a ready prepared offering that can be moulded around a hair rigged pellet or boilie and the Barbel & Carp Hookbait Pellets are 11mm in size, packed full of flavour and soft enough to hair-rig without drilling. Both the paste and hook pellets are available in hemp and halibut, hemp and cheesy garlic and hemp and spicy sausage flavours. Matching liquid enhancers are available in the same flavours.
Price is £3.99 for the elliptical pellets, and £2.99 for the paste, hook pellets and liquid attractors.

I suspect that the elliptical shape is a good theory, but that in practice they will still drift downstream just as much as spherical, or cylindrical ones. Once on the bottom, most pellets tend to not move as much as you might expect, due to the velocity gradient experienced near the river bed.
Smoothness ( or lack of smoothness) of the bottom is a far greater factor.

I'm not sure about the elliptical shape on the feed pellets but the hooker pellets are like 'seconds' from the pellet factory.

They're full of oil though and have a cracking scent. I've used them the 3 times I've been on the Dane this season and caught well every time - 9 barbel to 7.2 and 13 chub to 3.14 almost all on the spicy sausage or halibut flavours.

They hair rig a treat and you could probably side hook them on a big hook. £2.99 a tub in Trafford Angling and enough in a tub to keep you in hookbait for a few months. I'm going to try the paste as a wrap next and see what that does.
