Default cormorants are no threat????
hi lads. the rspb. has made a report saying that cormorants are no threat to our rivers and still waters.? and they have found no evidence that cormorants are affecting fish stocks. what the bloody hell do the rspb think the birds are eating when cruising up n down our rivers.i was down on the goyt yesterday, i saw cormorants as well as quite a lot of goosanders. happily fishing away. i would have thought the E.A. might have made a statement on this matter, as all they are doing is stocking the rivers to feed the birds. billy.

Near to where I live are some large gravel pits that used to hold huge species of all kinds of fishing. Huge Carp up to 40 plus , Bream shoals with fish up to 12lb , Roach Rudd Tench in thier thousands, Pike up to 30 plus .
The RSPB took over the lakes about 6 years ago and stopped all fishing on it . They also changed the lake to introduce an area for Bitterns to breed.
Now on one of the islands a colony of Cormorants took up recidence with numbers swelling to well over 200. A couple of years went by and no bitterns took up recidence and bred so the E A were called in to survey the fish stocks. All they found was a small shoal of roach holed up beneath a huge overhanging tree , a few emaciated pike and some large carp.
So it seems to me that they have shot themselves in the foot the bitterns wont breed because of the low fish stocks caused by the cormorants.
