Question Mersey way
Is mersey way the shopping area over the river mersey in Stockport the widest bridge in the world?

Edit
Got this from Wiki

The centre's name Merseyway comes from the fact that the centre is built on giant stilts above the River Mersey and the river runs for the entire length of the centre. In 2001 there were plans to fit glass panels to the pavements within the centre to reveal the River Mersey underneath, this was a plan to try and boost tourism in the town as the river is entirely covered and hidden while it runs under the centre. However there has been no development of these plans.

Dunno about that one Glenn. They do occasional underground tours down there. I have to say I was rather dissapointed. Glad the tour was free. Even more shopping trolleys in the river down there. And 17 colonies of pipistrelles.
And two huge pipes feeding in water...or sewage? Not sure which. The Tin Brook maybe?
It is illegal to canoe along the river below Merseyway. They are scared of terrorist bombs being attached to the concrete supports for the shopping centre.
They said otters are regularly seen down there, but I suspect they have all been mink.

Most towns/cities tend to work around features such as Rivers, Stockport decides to build over the top of theirs.

It may have something to do with the surrounding topography? A little digging may give up the answers.

You probably know, but originally Merseyway was built as a road on stilts, hence the Mersey"way" , and was needed because it carried the old trams, which required relatively flat ground. The tram depot, and the fire station used to be where the entrance is now to Merseyway shopping centre. Merseyway was built astride the river, which back then was pretty filthy and hardly a feature worth preserving. Only later was the shopping centre built, and the sides where the stilts are was blocked in, thus hiding the river completely. Under Merseyway you can see the foundation stone of the early Stockport Grammar School.

See: http://interactive.stockport.gov.uk/...rca%201960.jpg

The curved road is Merseyway. As a very young kid I remember riding an old tram along Merseyway.

My great grandad was one of the first men to drive trams in Stockport and on his first trip to brewers green (hazel grove) a man wanted to get his donkey on board because it was tired.

I certainly remember the name Nield and Hardy's Billy. I wouldn't have remembered what they sold, didn't have enough money to waste on records.

Perhaps you should tell the other forum members what a record is? ;-)
