conflicting tales on this 1,the fed says that it was mainly silver fish that were lost, however eyewitnesses say there were alot of larger fish lost ie pike, carp and a few bream no tench? reported dead though.i was told they will replace the lost fish.

i was told by murphy on pp that only small (ish) fish had been killed, but reports say otherwise, however i beleive the tench, larger carp and bream have survived, but how true this is i dont know.

Murphy is completely wrong. (Who the hell is Murphy?) I personally saw about twenty dead carp into maybe the mid teens, a dozen pike to about 10 pounds, some bream, and a lot of smaller fish. 500 might be a good guess as to the visible dead fish that I saw. At the time the pond was still frozen over and there could easily have been far more fish dead. Just because I didn't see any tench, does not mean that they survived. Until someone fishes it a few times, we will have no idea whether the pond is now barren.

All suggestions that fish have survived is so far speculative. Has anyone fished it, or seen live fish?

That fish have died in numbers is quite definite. I suspect that there are no pike or sizeable carp remaining.

Any good tench or bream left? I really do not know, but fear the worst.

'who is murphy ?' john murphy the bailiff on pp, i saw the pictues in the newspaper jayzs so i know he was bullsh*tting lol, a bloke on monkey's said he'd fished it very recentely spent a day without a tap,saw no sign of fish movement either so i would say it looks grim to say the least, murphy did say however that the fed will re-stock it, but i doubt they'll replace the pike sadly.

Default A Little Good News.
Wandered down to Newhouse today. The intention was to photograph the colony of miner bees that live in the banks there. I figured the weather would bring them out active. Tick! They were mating. Hundreds of them.

But whilst there I saw a fairly large shoal of small fry dimpling the surface. Small roach I guess, and although I couldn't easily see them, they were up to maybe 3 inches long as a maximum, most much smaller. I think I talked previously about the fact that small fish were more efficient in their oxygen usage than larger specimens of the same species, but it is good to know that not all the fish have perished. That crazy resident heron was at his usual post in the willow too.

Tench: dunno. Depends how efficient they are at extracting oxygen in low levels compared to other fish. If, as I suspect, they are more lethargic in winter than carp, maybe they have a chance.

One other thing to consider is this: underneath the ice, there would not have been much water movement: no wind, no birds, little fish movement during Winter. So it could just be that the de-oxygenation might have been local to specific areas of the pond, and one or more areas might just have been rich enough in oxygen/deep enough to allow all the fish in that area to survive. In which case we might still have a nice mix of species remaining. It's one possibility...probably a remore one though.

P.S. Never seen the water there quite so clear, which suggests that there are few fish stirring it up.
