Question Help with a rod
Hi Guys,

Ive been given a rod that hasnt been used for a few years and was sat in my father in laws shed gathering dust, the whipping was falling off and the rings were all battered, and the fixed quivertip is split. What i was wondering if anyone can tell me if its worth restoring back to its former glory.

Its a Pateke & Morton J.Stevens Special 10' Barbel Quiver, now ive had a breif look on the interweb and cant find anything about it. The father in law said it was a superb rod in its day and to be honest i have a thing about older rods and think any rod that was good then would still be good now.

Ive managed to source some new rings for it but it needs a new quivertip which im pretty certain i will be able to fix any generic tip frop my tackle shop, so no great expense there, but it could probably do with a new cork handle and reel mount too.

So as you can see it'll prob cost a few quid to make this rod usable again, so like i say has anyone heard of these rods and is it worth it?

this isnt going to of any help to you what so ever but pateke morton rods were a big thing in sea and salmon fishing circles in the 80`s accoding to the interweb, cant find a single reference to coarse rods made by pateke morton, it seems they may have been taken over by century about 30 years ago, got all this of the web so cant promise accuracy

like i said, not gonna help you much

Before you lash out on doing it up, what are you intending to do with it? Just bear in mind that fashions in barbel fishing have changed a lot over the years. Gear and tactics have got decidedly heavier. There's a good chance that the rod is decidedly light by modern standards.

It was my intention to possibly use it. I know that the person i got it from caught barbel on it, and i think a 10' rod would have its uses even for modern day fishing, but as you say things have changed, hence the reason im trying to find out as much about the rod as possible before i embark on a pointless journey.

I think that sums it up.

If you can see a use for it in your fishing, then go ahead. I can't say I've ever heard of the manufacturer, but you sound as though you know a bit about rod building to know if it can be of use.

It may be possible to lengthen the rod at the butt end if you are looking to re-cork.
