Just a thought but if everybody doing the same thing , try something completely different and you may be suprised.

Considering i can usually only manage one session a week, last winter i found every other week i was buying a different flavoured boilie trying to find a one that would work which was wasting money considering i was only maybe using a dozen or so out the packet and the rest were getting binned which seemed pointless

Use the same baits all season, just apply them differently to suit the conditions.

Cold - No big beds of any bait, maggots fed little and often, boilies and pellets fine as hook baits but feed very sparingly.
If you do have a few barbel actively feeding in front of you and you wish to use pellets, use the low oil variants, because in cold water the barbel's digestion rate is greatly reduced and the oils contained start to solidify, slowing digestion rate further, so filling them up very quickly.
