Winter baits and groundbait.
Now that winters fast approaching and the waters getting cooler most people will be switching there attention to boilie hookbaits , so what flavour and size will you be using, tried a few different sizes and tastes last winter along with different groundbaits and failed miserably........any recommendations...

Yes you're quite right. Although low oil content needs to be achieved at times as sometimes not!

Can I ask, baits for winter barbel: Fishy, savoury or fruity? oily or not oily? small amount of bait or not? for me I'd go with a small 8-10mm fishmeal boilie soaked in its proprietary glug with a few free offerings nearby. Would I be off the mark? Kev's spicy baits sound tempting to me but that's because I'm hungry
BTW I've never had much success with pineapple pop ups which seem to be a favoured winter carp bait with some people.

Fruity flavours especially in pop up form are just not good for barbel in my opinion, although they have been caught on fruity flavours before. The meaty, fishy and savoury type/s account for much more barbel. You say you've tried pop ups? Well look into using different colours in a spicy mix and see you fortunes change, trust me. The 8mm or 10mm boilies is fine but in coloured water try up to 20mm with paste wrapped around it, I use a lot of grubber paste to wrap round a grubber/source boilie or similar. The glug effect works also so spot on there!

Yes I've tried pineapple pop ups without much success with carp, but not with barbel. I like your paste idea Ricky.
As a suggestion, how about pepperami as a winter bait? or is it too oily?

ive got to say i find rajah spice (quest baits) in 15 or 20mm wrapped in its paste a top notch winter bait, i generally go for strong smelling spicy baits when the water is coloured it gives the barbel a nice scent trail to home in on, i do also use good old fashioned meat , again though i give it a nice n spicy coating

Pepperami is good in Winter, not too oily no. Definitely worth a go although I have only used it an handful of times but I have caught barbel on it, but not as much as boilies, maybe someone else can tell you more. I like Chris's point about the spice and indeed that boilie (I haven't used them myself) as I was going to try them this Winter. Spicy and/or smelly is the order of the day when the water is coloured. And don't forget the paste as it peels off bit by bit it send a scent trail downstream.
Going to try my rubby dubby mix this Winter also...
Good luck
Ricky
