Default Braid or Mono?
Hi

Do you guys have a preference to braid or mono for hooklink material? Have you noticed a difference in hook ups?

I have started using braid and I think its a very good option. I had a barbel on the severn and it took me into a snag, after a while I got it out and landed it but on inspection of the hookling it was badly frayed but did not break! I think if I was using mono I would of lost the fish no question.

So what do you guys think? Are there any other advantages for braid over mono or vise versa?

Braid is stronger, thinner and more flexible.

In some situations it can be be less visible than mono too.

Coated braid is certainly more abrasion resistant than mono.

Braid, being multi-strand itself can sometimes fail in a less catastrophic way than mono.

When I'm rolling meat, I have braid(spiderwire) on my centrepin. All my other Barbel fishing is done with mono.
Ray Walton uses Spiderwire braid.

i use both braid and mono Chris. Braid in a very snaggy weir that i fish, mono when i can use lighter tackle in reletivley snag free areas. Power Pro braid is superb.

Agreed, Sinkbraid is cheap and very good, but don't use in rocky or near mussel beds etc, but I'm sure you know this.

Hiya,
Can recomend spiderwire great stuff very supple and thin, a mate of mine brought me a couple of spools (100mtrs) from usa a few years back. If you do go for spiderwire, only use recomended knots.

I wonder why no manufacturer has tried to make even thinner mono...by using single strand braid material?

Billy, when you are sat there blanking, maybe you could unravel a length and give one of the strands a try? ;-)
