never heard of that one I need enlightening too , the only way around the leaves is to pinn ure line to the deck, which would mean a flying back lead and a back lead at the tip and bury the tip, not sure if it can be done on a larger river.

Im sure ive read about it somewhere? Maybe not! im from a carp fishing background so not a complete dunce, but i cant see how pinning your line to the deck especially on the ribble will be at all advantageous, with the snags and all? Im sure someone will help

A stop knot placed a foot or two above your terminal end should help.

Is that so the leaves gather round that rather than the hook end? do they make it that far down?

Yes they gather round the knot as oppose to the hook end, they can make it that far down and if so the knot will stop them making it any further. If your terminal end is free from weed/leaves, gathering anywhere else really doesn't matter.

Cheers, great bit of advice there. How about bite detection then? as currently the rod tip is constantly on the move back and forth with the flow even in lowish water levels and its hit and miss really as to what is a bite and what isnt?

For instance today the rod got pulled off the rest three times, im assuming it was the flow or something snagging the line or it could of been a missed bite?

There really isn't mistaking a bite mate, barbel bite quick and aggressive as a rule. If your rod is being pulled off the rest by weed/leaves then that's a different matter entirely, whilst it will not spoil presentation of your end tackle using a stop knot above your terminal end, your rod being pulled in by weed is not conducive. Best advice I can give you here is make your rig as simple as possible e.g. a running rig with very limited components. I never worry about weed/leaves on the line unless it's doing as you say pulling the rod in and in that case I will bring in and recast.

Usually when this happens it's weed or a plastic bag or suchlike getting caught on the line. Also are you sure the weight your using is heavy enough?

Although it doesn't look good (your rod swaying back and forth) when weed catches your line but providing you have this stop knot above terminal end you can rest assured it won't be messing up your presentation mate.

Hope that helps

Ricky

No problem mate and 5oz sounds fine. Yes all the crap will will pull the line and will then pull your rod round. You'll get a barbel eventually mate and then you'll know what I mean then about a barbel bite.
