Default Yet another fish kill !!!
Angling Trust

Environment Agency investigating major water pollution incident in West London Environment Agency officers will continue working today on a major sewage pollution incident which has left thousands of fish dead in West London. An estimated 3000 fish are now dead in the River Crane, a tributary of the River Thames, after raw sewage began to discharge into the river on Saturday. Environment Agency officers have been working round the clock to try and minimise any further environmental damage,, taking water samples and assessing the impact on fish. A silver command has been established to bring the situation under control as quickly as possible. Environment Agency Area Manager Julia Simpson said: "This is a major incident and it appears that thousands of fish have been killed. Environment Agency officers have been working around the clock to minimise any further impact this incident has on the environment. We will be overseeing the clean up and have launched a full investigation. "We advise people to keep themselves and their pets out of the water until the incident is resolved."

how does raw sewerage get into the river system without somebody actually putting it there purposely, not exactly a mistake in this day and age is it.
cheers

Richard / Jerry you are right!! It really is not good enough, but then again it is also not entirely un expected either!

The simple fact is that Great Britain (an important member of the EU and seventh largest economy in the world) does not have an organisation that takes responsibility for, or gives protection to, the environment within its borders.

The EA who are supposedly “Guardians of the environment” will do all the testing and then pontificate about what should have happened but ultimately will do what they always do, which essentially will amount to …………………NOTHING!!!!

In this case the polluter is Thames Water, Thames Water are only beholden to their shareholders, so it is their job to produce as much money as is possible with the minimum of investment, they could pollute all day long and their shareholders (and the government) will be as happy as Larry.

What makes this situation worst is that the very people that are responsible for attempting to deal with sewerage services are the ones who take all the water from our rivers………… and they are only interested in keeping their shareholders in funds!

Please don’t think I am some anti capitalist wax haired sandal wearer, to be fair I am not even a socialist, in the main I am all for free trade and privatisation, but as far as water is concerned we should not be in a position where these companies have shareholders to answer too, water supply in the UK is a monopoly, you cannot for example go to Scottish water and buy theirs, you can only buy from one supplier in your area.

For that reason alone water should never have been privatised!

The fact is that it has been privatised, worst than that even is the fact that the main directors of these companies are in France, I suspect they don’t give a stuff whether or not we have clean water in either our taps or our rivers!

We are very poorly served, the water companies will do the absolute minimum that legislation allows and there are no checks and controls in place to ensure our rivers have either clean water or a minimum flow level, you would think that this is the job of the EA but they are totally beholden to the government and large companies.
They have not, do not and will not do anything that either the government or big business does not like, you only have to look at their response to the regular un-treated sewage discharges into The Thames from Mogden sewage works to see just what good the EA are (they trott out the same video of a Salmon at Shepperton weir every time and the bloody Salmon has been dead for fifteen years).

What we DO need in this country is an organisation that can stand up for the environment no matter who threatens it, talking about it is no bloody good whatsoever; we need an organisation that makes a difference.

BEFORE ALL OUR RIVERS DRY UP OR WE ARE ALL POISONED!!!

Devastating for the local anglers. I had never heard of this river, but these photos show it held barbel, as well as pike, chub, eels and smaller species.

All to frequent of an event sadly....

I do worry that in the current economic climate that rules and regs regarding the enviroment may become even more lax in the name of big business making profit.

Default Fish Kill
Hi all,

There is something anglers can do about polluters.
It is not to long ago that the river Dane had a large fish kill due to sewage.
The EA were contacted by Steve Beech the secretary of Winsford Angers .
Steve being a a dog with a bone ensured that the E A did it's job and located the source of the pollution.
This was the local water authority.
Steve then persued the polluter with the aid of the E A and others who I cannot at this time recall.
The outcome was that the polluter ended up in the Chester Crown Court which resulted in a fine of around £80000 and compensation for Winsford Anglers.
If people are prepared to put the effort in and not be intimidated by threats from these large companies then results can be obtained.
I am sure that Steve would give any advice sought by angling clubs which have suffered from this tragedy.
I am sorry about the scant details but my memory is not what it was but persuing these offenders is the only way forward.
Steve Beech is the Cheshire regional organiser for the Barbel Society and can be contacted via information on the Barbel Society web site.

Never say or think that as mere anglers we cannot do anything we do have the power if you have the will.
