Default smoked mackeral fillet as bait?
after eating some tonight it looked quite applealing for a barbel bait to me smelly/oily and tough enough to hook and probably hair, just wondering has anyone used it for barbel and if so how did they do,would be interseting to find out.

Dunno about Barbel but have seen eels take it, was at a biodiversity event doing a talk on river life and the estate owners used to feed the eels from a bridge, quite amusing to see whole fillets being dragged into rocks.

Barbel have been known to take small minnows etc so they obviously eat fish but a full mackerel fillet might be going a bit too far. Stick to the boilies and pellets and you wont go far wrong.

Give it a go. But remember that the time to try out new baits, and get reasonable results, is when barbel are feeding well. Don't base results on a day when other baits were ignored...unless the new bait catches of course.

Sound advice that, John. Many a new bait's discarded when tried in conditions where a 'confidence' bait would fare no better. Silly really
