Doing an article on that very thing at the moment if your interested. Will let you know when it's finished. Some others in the meantime will properly give you some good advice, no doubt.

Fish light with maggots on hook or maggot ring, at least you should bang a few good chub out as well.

Hi Cheef - look out for rising water temps, preferably but not necessarily above 6 degrees celsius. Rain will often bring barbel on the feed, however cold rain will do the opposite. Some say smaller baits work better in winter, certainly when the river's not high.....but I agree with you about a big lump of meat in high water, providing the conditions are right. It's always a bit hit and miss during the winter though, so good luck. As an example, I booked a day off work to fish just before Xmas. The conditions weren't ideal but beggars can't be choosers, right? Needless to say I blanked. The very next day a very good mate fished the same peg; lower levels and slightly warmer. He caught the river record. It's all about being flexible and the ability to pick the right day.
Ricky - that's a completely pointless post, its sole aim to promote (once again) your blog. Cheef's after a bit of info now, not to be pointed to some as-yet-unwritten piece the may (or may not) be of any use, depending on the content.
Couldn't you have just imparted some useful words of advice?? You must already know what you're going to write in your blog.
Now blog off.......

Lol, now did I actually say it was going on my blog.......? No, because it isn't. It's for an application for an angling tackle and bait company, that once the finished piece is handed to them. It will then be checked and put on their site if I am successful. I will then post it on to cheef as it may be useful to him or pointed to the direction of the site.
You really are such full of cynicism when it comes to me aren't you Rich, lol. No....I don't blame you, it gets up your nose, don't you think I know that it does?
I will be happy to offer any advice but the article isn't finished yet and I really don't want to repeat what I have said in it.
Ricky

Well when will it be ready, because it will be bloody pointless for the thread starter if you aren't going to write it until March the 13th.
And once I have read it I will expand on the points you miss out or don't write much about and also make a post more relevant to smaller waters.
Something Ricky by his own admission knows naff all about, even the ones on his doorstep...
Sorry if this seems petty but I have no interest in helping Ricky write anything for his blog (flog). Cheef, if you want I will send you a PM which would be pertinent to the middle Severn (Bridgenorth to Bewdley).

I wish I did have small rivers on my doorstep, I got all the marketing value out of FM thanks very much, I even pleaded with the mods to keep that thread, lol. And once again I reiterate this is not for MY Blog!!!
Oh and feel free to amend it or put your own little article to Cheef, no one is stopping you, and it will be long before March. I'll even send it to Cheef privately so I'm not promoting anything.
Oh and when did I say I knew "naff" all about small rivers? I just know about the Trent as I have fished more or less exclusively over the past 3 - 4 years that's not to say I haven't fished small rivers. I just don't have many that are close enough (within 30 miles) that hold barbel and are available on a Day ticket that's all.
All the best for the new year.
Ricky
