I would look at one of the reuben heaton castable thermometers, i know the temp is not going to be much different from the bank to where you are fishing, but on a sunny day for example, things like sand will hold the heat and won't give you a really accurate reading.
I cast mine out, leave it a couple of minutes and then reel back in.
