Yep - 6 or 8mm pellets for me too, unless eels are a problem - which they can be sometimes!
Sausage meat is excellent too! Stiffen it by adding crushed hemp until it forms a nice paste and use it like that. When mixed with the hemp it doesn't attract eels like standard meat baits do ( has anyone gathered i don't like eels! ), either hair rig a small cork ball and mould it around that or my prefered method is to hook a piece of fake pop up corn onto a size 6 or 8 and mould the paste around that. By burying the hook in the paste you tend to avoid snags, weed and debris collecting around the hook which can be a problem with the standard hair rig. The corn has two purposes - (1) it helps keep the paste on ( a paste stop or spring would do the same ) and (2) it counterbalances the weight of the hook meaning the hookbait behaves in the same manner as the freebies ( something a paste stop or spring can't do! )
Casters and hemp in combination is an all time classic for summer barbel in low conditions - i like to use artificial casters on the hook as they help avoid nuicance species and again, the pop up ones counterbalance the weight of the hook - i generally use 2, either hooked directly or hair rigged to a size 14 Drennan Super Specialist.
Never been much of a boilie man myself but anything flavoured with monster crab will be a winner! I've caught well on Dynamite Monster Crab and Nash Monster Persuit. Loads of other boilies work but Nutrabaits Trigga has to be the one for me - as long as you don't mind catching big chub! They love it!!
