hi leon,
firstly have a look at the bait survey on here,it'll give good clues as to what everyone rates and uses, rig wise pretty much carp setups really free running ledgers or swimfeeders, hair rigged baits matched to your hooksize.
kev.

Yep basic carp set ups. I always use rigs around 3ft long with the good old pellet on a hair.
I use 15lbs main and 10lb bottom, I do not like being snapped off.
You'll still get chub and trout taking that.
Don't be surprised if the local police or a PCSO pops round and asks for a rod licence and ID as you do get local piss heads fishing round there
And the odd safe or ATM rolled down the bank.

Try a halibut pellet on a hair rig, with a running leger. 10lb main line and strong hooklength (mono, fluoro, braid), and not too short. Nothing complicated. Use a swimfeeder with hemp, scalded pellets, etc, or a pva bag attached to your weight.
Swims; fish where you see creases between flowing and stiller water (signifies deeper glides juxtaposed to shallower water. Or fish near snags with a longer hooklength. Pin it down if you're worried about spooking fish. There aren't that many pegs along the Paintmaster stretch anyway.
The rest, my friend, you'll have to work out for yourself, over time. Don't expect to catch every session as the Goyt can be unforgiving. Good luck. Next season, if you fish the Goyt more regularly, it might be worth getting a Stockport Fed card.....

Difficult to say: I think you have to take some risk almost anywhere when fishing with a vehicle these days.
I get especially worried when fishing some distance from home, say on the Severn or Trent. Being stranded, stinking of fish and pellets, with half a hundredweight of gear, 70 miles from home is a concern.
It can be interesting reading sometimes on the Goyt thread.
I think it was Billy fishing there when two safes were thrown down the bank and into the water right where he was fishing. Hard not to laugh, although it could have been very serious for him.

A bit off topic but its the same road where drug dealers made some poor lad drink petrol then locked him in a boot of a car and torched it.
You'll be OK in the day

I wish some other parents would keep their kids off the rivers too. I have twice had trouble with young teens throwing stones into the river. Asking them if they would mind throwing them elsewhere resulted in one case of them throwing stones at me instead ( on the Goyt), and in the other case they threatened to call the police and say I was a paedophile. ( on the Mersey).
I had remained pleasant with them, and on the Goyt had even looked after their bikes whilst they wandered off for a short time before the stone throwing began. Evil little *********s

Ha ha...very reassuring, Glenn.
Leon - I've fished there a few times and haven't seen anything untoward. You'd be severely unlucky were anything to happen to you, or your van.
Try the swims nearer the bridge.....
