I'm really not bothered either way how many ounces bigger fish are in relation to previous captures. Knowing how big the residents of various Rivers and even down to noted pegs doesn't really yank my chain. I'm certainly not anal enough to feel annoyed if a chub, roach or anything else for that matter takes my bait.

I would agree entirely: the best challenge is the one you have set for yourself. Doesn't matter whether or not it involves big fish. There are so many types of challenge that can be set, and varying the fish, fishing, venue and method, added to just being there, is what, for me, it is all about.

Like it, or not, the chance of a big fish is what many anglers get out of bed for (not literally, obviously). So where you don't see the point, others may.
I hasten to add that if all anglers were as conscientious and had your attitude to fishing, the world would be a better place.....

So why isn't there a chub record, or dace record, or grayling record?
This is how I see it:
Record chasers mainly do so for self-fulfilment, some have used it to get their names recognised in angling, to earn free bait and tackle sponsorships... and others have done it just to be recognised as having caught the biggest known fish- just for bragging rights really.
I've never held a river record and never will (because when i catch such a fish the angling fraternity won't be notified- thats another matter), and i can't believe for one minute that people who do hold records have done so for reasons other than pride and recognition from their peers. If thats what they need, then fair play, I just can't see why anyone would be bothered if I went and caught a biggie, apart from wanting to know where it came from.

I was only asking as a matter of interest didn't want to start a carp type moral debate about the in and outs of publicity seeking , secret squirrels or barbel police , after all this is a public forum and posting is a way of publicizing your own views ?
definition:
Publicity is the deliberate attempt to manage the publics perception of a subject.
