Default Close season thoughts
Hi All

Anybody got an opinion, regarding the close season dates.

I don't want to be seen as not, fish friendly angler. But if all the carp anglers get to spend all summer fishing then I think us barbel boys should be cut a bit of slack.
Why not just have from the first of April to the 31st. of may.

On the Severn in the close season, I know for a fact the barbel are hunted for, by the polish community undisturbed. Due to no anglers on the banks

Can we start a campaign. Just an idea . All thoughts welcome good or bad

imo the close season should stay on rivers, it gives everything time to rest and re grow without us anglers interfering, the majority of fish get to spawn in relative peace, i know this can go on into the new season but not every year.
the close season should stay its a good thing, whether it needs to be tweaked by a week or 2, well thats for somebody more qualified than all of us to decide
cheers

I was astonished to find that the close season had gone on still waters. On my return to fishing I waited until June 16th to cast a line, when, apparently, I could have been fishing!
It seems fairly obvious that the still close season went for "commercial" reasons.
Surely the fish are the same, have the same sort of spawning needs, and both would profit from a close.
I cannot see why a river bream should be more sensitive than a still water bream.

the closed season as it stands now is just a joke, can anyone explain to me the thinking behind the closed season being the mess that it is,responsible fisheries close at the first sign of spawning others do not and as js said in his post it is all about profit and not fish welfare (which it is supossed to be),i would think that in the days when all waters were closed tackle shops sold more stuff in the closed season than any other time of the year,if i had my way the old closed season with possibly a change in the dates should be brought back but it will never happen.

I think the whole 'close season' thing has probably been done to death in the angling press and other forums
I'm not convinced that it gives relief to the fish at spawning time. I've seen a lot of barbel spawning after June 16th over the years especially if its been a cold Spring

However I do think a lot of rivers, and the fish population particularly, benefit from a lack of angling pressure for a few months so I'm happy with the way it is.

Personally I don't fish much in the Spring anyway - it gives me chance to catch up on a few other things life throws in the way, but I can appreciate that others would like to
And it must be particularly annoying seeing 'our friends from the east' ignoring the rules

Every year its always a big thrill being back on the riverbank after a 3 month break for the first cast of the season and the first bite still gets the old heart pumping faster

now i dont know how true this is i never looked into it but a friend of mine told me that the original close season was bought into play not for fish spawning purposes or anything else to aid recovery but so the upper classes could fish away with there fly rods without being disturbed by the lower classes who occupied the bankside most of the yr round, true or false i,ve no idea
cheers

I'm all for the closed season, it gives the fish relief and the banks.

There's nothing better than returning to a peg that produces and its all over grown, its like you just discoved it for the first time, then I blank again

I hate worn out pegs with bits of litter lying around the floor.
