Default which line for pins ?
hi chaps,
does the type and bs of line for use on a pin depend on weather you trott or ledger with it ? i'm asking as i've seen a dvd where mr pope has quite heavy braid on his but he is ledgering not trotting,on the other end of the spectrum i've head of lads on here that only have 2lb line on their pins, but this seems a little too light to me in case of snags, any thought chaps?

cheers

kev.

For Barbel trotting on the pin I generally use Drennan float fish in 6lb bs straight through. Its a good reliable floating line. Dont overload the spool with more line than necessary otherwise you will have problems with it bedding in. Hope that is of some use.

depends on your rods as well and matching the two together. If I was fishing with maggots and caster 2.6lb line with my microlight rod would be as heavy as I would go, where as if I was using a chubber I would go for 5lb line and a stiffer rod like commercial carp float rod ,as for the ledger rod its whatever you like I suppose, the most important thing is to get a line that floats for stickfloat fishing . Never seen you floatfish kev , you do realise you have to stand up

The saint is right, the tackle must be balanced. I use a 14ft trotting rod specifically designed for Barbel so a 6lb line balances well with this. If I am fishing for smaller barbel I use a softer 17ft bolo rod and 5lb line. The rivers I fish are fairly snaggy so will never go lighter than 5lb bs.

cheers for info chaps, yes mark i know i have to stand to trott thats why i just ordered some breathable waders n boots lol, however it does appeal to me to get a decent barbel on a pin with a ledgered rig,i have trotted a float with my 'normal' gear and enjoyed it.

cheers

I use Silstar Match Team in 7 1/2lb BS (I think) for barbs. Great line with a fairly low diameter and good knot strength.

If I was after silvers I would drop my mainline down and balance my tackle more to what I was fishing for.

Don't use pins for ledgering - not great at casting any great distance with them

For trotting use mono 6/7lb for barbel and 4/5lb for chub - only put about 70yds on at a time.

The rapidex I use has a solid spool which is a little better at preventing 'bedding in' than the spoked types
