Default tips for River Ribble
Hey up guys,

Has anyone got any decent rig tips & bait tips for the Ribble, usually I use the good old fashioned sweetcorn or trout pellets fished the way my old man taught me, fished straight down the main line.

But alas I'm thinking I need to get up to date and use another approach.

Any help would be good.

nice one.

how do peacock.. i would say if yer catching and feel comfortable with what yer using... stay with it.. there is a minefield of different baits and methods out there and its very easy to get sucked in it al..(god knows i have). can become very expensive.. maggots are a favourite on the river... especially in cold water... but its mainly about confidence in what yer using... and finding the fish..ya cant catch what aint there as has been said on many occasion in many threads..
good luck anyway

I don't fish the ribble much these days but when I did the general approach was to find the deeper gullies which the fish patrol up and down and drop a bait in there.

My standard approach was a groundbait feeder sandwiching small pellets with either a boilie or pellet on the hook.

In the warmer weather it often paid to repeatedly cast a feeder in for an hour to get some bait down and then fish over the top. At this time of the year you will need to cut the feed right back and a maggot approach may be more benificial unless of course there is a big flood then get out the big smelly baits.

Hope this helps.

Lot of bait that for Feb
Easy to put to much in at this time of year and then it knocks em of the area for a while.
90% of barbel ive had since xmas have come to a bomb and pellet with paste wrap on it.
Study the water and theres no need for the heavy feed at this time of year.

P.S. Before anybody gets arsey its not a me avin a go its just my way of fishing/thinking

Hi Peacock

I'd be tempted to Fish a couple of pegs down from ANDYB and do what the Gudgeon suggested

i'd agree with what gudgeonboy says.. although i've yet to get a barb this season(sob sob) i have managed most other species using the same method...
if using maggot i'd say use highly flavoured ones.. draw em up and increase your chances by not having as much bait there.. but andy.. if it works for you fair play mate... not knocking it.. the trent boys use tonnes of bait season long and they bag up...i just think..like gudgeon says... its not really needed.. my own opinion... its just use an excuse not to buy loadsa bait
