Default Big River weir fishing (i.e. Thames etc...)
How do you go about it? Let us say the weir, for examples sake, was a simple right-angled affair, with the bulk of the water falling straight over the sill with the excess/ overflow tumbling down the side of it to meet the bulk of flow. Flow is fairly normal, but pushing through a bit.

river -----> [_weir
river ---------> { lock }

You have no boat.

Where do you start and more importantly, where do you fish? You have one rod.

There is no right or wrong answer, I simply find big weirs difficult and lack confidence on them. Your views would be interesting.

Default Weirs
Two things to consider with weirs.
They increase the oxygen content of the water below the weir and they pose a partial barrier to fish movement.

Fish will collect at a barrier and also like the increased oxygen in their water below the weir.

They don't however like battling a raging current as it's hard work for the fish.

The favourite fish place near a weir will be downstream of the weir and behind obstacles which slow down or stop the flow.

Therefore look for these types of place when you fish.

at the very bottom of the weir/wall there's a calm spot which is virtually still its at this spot that alot of food items collect when they wash over the weir they get thrown backwards,fish gather here for this reason and to shelter from the torrent of the flow in the weir-pool,i saw a very interesting film of it once,this why most anglers that fish weirs fish right into the weir as close to the back wall as possible.

Post weirs
all weirs are different and constantly changing,moreso the uncontrolled type,a good knowledge of the underwater geography is a must as with any part of the river,find the depressions,bars,rocks ect where the fish find food and shelter from the current,they visit these places and return to calmer waters.i have seen barbel swim with their backs out the water like salmon in shallow water to reach a raging weirpool,dont think they done it to keep fit lol

Must agree about the calmer water, all the bigger fish I've had from collingham wier have come from areas of smoother water.
