Default River Tame Stockport
Hi guys

Sorry this is my first post and im digging for info I am new to river fishing been carping for 10 years but this is all new .I have fished the Tame 4 times only and have managed a 3 lb barbel and missed a couple. (not sure if they were chub).

I was just after some help or pointers in the right direct.I will tell you how im fishing at the mo see what you think and any help will be welcome.

I thought I would keep it as close to what i know as possible to start so i opted for 12lb mainline 2oz running lead, size 10 hook, tied knotless knot with halibut pellet on hair tight to bend of the hook.Fished with a pva bag of freebies.Oh and im using leadcore as leader about 3 foot(think this might be bad idea not sure)

What you guys think.

Thanks

hi mate, nowt wrong with your set up,all i'd change is dump the leadcore for mono fluro or braid hooklengths and make your hairs longer.

cheers

general rule for rivers is ....

low n clear = loger hooklengths anything from 18" to 5 or 6ft

deep, coloured and racing through = shorter say 6 to maybe 15 inch.

i've fished it when its been at the top of the banks lol,but usually in its deepest spots it only 2 to 4 ft deep under normal flow level i'd guess.its when its very low and gin clear you want the long hooklengths on.

Hi Gov, If you keep an eye on the river level site (top right hand corner)you will soon learn what the levels are when your out fishing,it also gives you an idea what its like before you go
Regarding your rigs just go off what kev has said but scale down if your just going for chub

Hi Gov - good advice from the two gents above. I read somewhere that having a slight gap (5mm to 10mm) from the bend of the hook to the bait will discourage chub. Not sure if there's anything scientific behind it, however. Some fish with the bait tight to the hair and catch plenty of barbel. You're doing alright so far so don't change for changes sake. Good luck
