You'll have to pay a big lump if you want a good Mac but you could build a beast of a PC for £800ish with a pentium i7 and 6gig of ram

Default PC or MAC
Very strongly suggest you avoid MAC's.

MAC kit is much more expensive at similar performance levels.

Worse however is that once you have it, you have far less software choice & what you are able to get is generally more expensive.
With a PC you can get a great deal of free & useful software.

Finally, if a MAC goes wrong out of warranty the spare parts are hard to get and if you can get them they are way more expensive than similar ones for a PC.

Most of the above is true with a Mac, however they are less prone to viruses with the correct protection. I think they're more user friendly than PCs and I use both.

Hi drynetter,

MAC's are less prone to viruses and malware because the nasty people who write virus & malware code want maximum return for their efforts.
They typically target Windoze PC's because these account for over 80% of computers in use. MAC's account for only about 10%.

In a similar way if you're on a PC and use any other web browser than Internet Explorer you are less prone to virus attack.

Regarding MAC's being more user friendly:-
I think it's a case of what you were brought up on. I can't get on with MAC's at all and always stumble at the first hurdle like finding the right mouse button etc. A bit like a fly fisherman trying to cast a lead weight on a fixed spool reel for the 1st time. "What's a bale arm?"

fishanchips,

you are spot on with your post reply but there may be 1 thing you overlooked,
drynetter, if you dont want to go the MAC route (and to be honest, i wouldnt) go for a PC with an i7 but to make it virtually virus free remove the windows operating system and put on a Linux operating system, as fishanchips rightly says, windows PC`s do have more viruses than MAC`s but only because the virus authors target windows (more users worldwide) but MAC viruses are catching up.
another good way to stay virus free is to use a decent anti-virus program (stay away from mcafee or norton)

but ultimately the choice is yours

cheers
chris

I use macs everyday, it is the industry standard for the sector I work in. The software exists for PC so you have to ask yourself why?

I'm not bashing anyone for using pc's or macs, they're both tools for a means to an end.

I don't see the point (personally) having a quadcore machine at home if you're only browsing the internet and watching porn.

haha true , depends on how heavy the porn use is i suppose

i agree quad core for home use is a little overkill, unless your a gamer , prefer to be on the bank with my rod in my hand to be honest (no that is not a reference to the porn comment )

personally i still run a dual core , which if the truth is told is more than enough for what most people need

Computers with single core processors from the AMD Athlon XP or Intel Pentium 4 range and upwards are perfectly OK for home computer and most business use where graphics intensive games aren't played.
That is **PROVIDING** they are not full of crap.

The majority of PC's get to run slow and take ages to start up because their users have a passion for downloading and installing every bit of free software available on the internet. Most of these applications have a component part that loads and runs each and every time the PC is started.

The net effect is that the available memory for the PC to use is much reduced and the PC is doing 20 or more things already before you ask it to do anything. Of course is goes slow - don't you when you're doing 20 things at once?

If you want to drastically improve the performance of your PC the first step is found in "add / remove programs".
Uninstall all the programs you don't use or need.

You do not need 4 web browsers, 3 anti-virus programs, 2 firewalls etc.

Try it; you'll also be surprised how many programs you collect over time - many not used or wanted.

Well that's my tip for today from a guy who when not out to fish fixes things with chip's in - puters included. Hence "fishanchips"
